How Motivated is Your Team?
You employ several people and you hold certain expectations as to what you will have in your workplace/business:
- Loyalty
- Productivity
- Honesty
- Being able to work well within the team
- Maintaining a harmonious workplace
Now comes the question:
Do you understand what you need to do to get that?
Simply thinking that paying them an above average rate does not do it. Let’s look at the reasons (or at least some of them)
People have changed and will continue to do so. We no longer get motivated by money. That phenomenon was true during the Industrial Revolution and for a few years post that. We now expect more from our workplace. Now we want to be recognised for our efforts, have some responsibility, feel that we belong and a career path.
That does not mean we can pay our staff less though. As much as money does not necessarily motivate a person, the lack thereof is surely a de-motivating factor. So, if you were asked to take charge of getting the team motivated, do you still think this means an increase for everyone?
If you do, you will have a short-term spike in motivation and then see it slump back to where it was or below. To motivate your team there are several things you will need to work on. The good thing is that it does not always cost a fortune to implement.
Go back to the expectations we listed at the start. Now ask yourself what your staff expectations are. This is your starting point. Get to understand the issues they encounter and work on it. Communication is also key to the entire process.
If you do not know what is demotivating them, how do you anticipate fixing it?
Motivation in the Workplace is not a 5-minute fix. It takes skill and time to address it, but once you get it underway, you will be glad you did. Not sure how to go about it? Contact me at PCE Training and I will be glad to assist.
