What Role Does Staff Engagement Play?
Let’s Face The Facts About Staff Engagement
Staff engagement is a vital aspect for every business. When employees are disengaged, they are no longer committed to the success of your business. In fact, you may very well find that they are actively seeking alternative employment. When this is the case, you will find the following areas are what you will be spending a lot of time on:
- Performance/Productivity
- Profitability
- Absenteeism
- Conflict between staff members
- Dealing with unhappy clients
- Poor quality leading to costly re-work
- Losing Key Staff
Why do staff become disengaged?
When we look at the cause for disengagement, it is important to understand what employees expect from employers today. We tend to believe that salary alone should keep people motivated and that is the first mistake. Sure, employees will expect to be well rewarded for their efforts, but there is more. Some of the factors we overlook are:
- Sense of Belonging
- Recognition
- Quality Leadership
- Clear Communication
- Collaboration
- Autonomy
- Career Path
These are some of the main areas we need to address to keep our team on track and, at the same time, make sure we do it correctly. As an example:
If you are going to recognise an employee for an outstanding achievement. make sure it is exactly that. Don;t fall into the trap of just recognising someone for an average performance. When this happens, your employees will see through it and it will lose all value.
If My Staff Are Disengaged, Can I ‘Fix’ It?
You certainly can. With the correct approach and collaboration with your staff, you can address issues and get your employees inspired to be part of your business. It is not a 5 minute approach though. You need to be as committed to this process as what you are to your business. If this sounds like a lot of time and effort, it is well spent. Having your employees positively engagement will have rewards that by far outweigh the effort you put in.
